Dependants?

Hello I want to apply for a credit card. I am a "homemaker" so myself a dependant also have children.  Since I'm putting in the husbands income too ontop of benefits my name is against how many dependents if any do I put?

Comments

  • To clarify I put benefits as my income which isn't much annually and put husband income in the other household income section but he has 3 dependants including me. I'm a bit confused.
  • I was going to put 0 because I'm a dependant but this would be my credit card. His income covers us all but since I'm including it do I put 3 dependants ...

From what you've said it sounds like your children are your dependants.  The acid test is, how many people are financially dependent on you?
You need to be a little bit careful about what income you declare.  If all your finances are joint then it's probably OK to put down your husband's income, but you mustn't lie on the application form - if you do, and are found out, you could end up with a CIFAS marker on your file which is not good.  A highly unlikely scenario, admittedly, but worth bearing in mind.
Is there a specific reason you're wanting a card yourself, rather than being an additional cardholder on your husband's account?
  • We are joint using the money since I don't work but he makes it. I want to build my credit score up from fair to good etc
  • So I guess with husband bringing in th4 money we are his 3 dependants and I have no financial dependants since stay at home mum ?

For what purpose?  Your score is meaningless.
If you're looking to build up a good credit history then fair enough, a credit card is a good way of doing this.

To be on the safe side, I'd put your dependants down as 2.  Sounds like you've declared your income truthfully, which is good.  The children are your dependants as much as your husband's.  It sounds like your situation is pretty typical of a great many households - so the application algorithm will almost certainly "recognise" it as such.  I'd put down 2 dependants, submit the applications and see what the result is.
I'm assuming you're applying for one of the "credit-builder" type cards rather than a more mainstream one?  If so you will probably be OK - their lending criteria tend to be less strict than the mainstream lenders, by the very nature of their target audience.
  • Thanks. Yes I'll put 2 then. We need to rent again as landlord moving back in here and they credit check us both for applications.

I'm not really in the loop with how it all works but just keep coming across everyone should build credit rating as so many companies seem to want to check it.
