If you only ever use the light in the loft for about an hour a year, I’d suspect it’s very unlikely that the tube has failed (unless it’s been up there for 15,000 years). Particularly given it doesn’t make any attempt to come on, which to me would suggest either a starter fault (simple) or a ballast fault (probably as good as terminal).
Another possibility is that there is no power getting to the fitting.  Do you (OP) have a) testing facilities such as a multi-meter and b) competency to carry out a check?
  • Hi,
do you have same fitting in kitchen, could maybe try swapping starter/tube?

I used an led battery light with PIR for ages in my last place.
Did the job well enough for getting things out and putting away.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

That’s a fair point and one I should have thought of, given that the light in my attic will only come on if the landing lights are turned on (the electrician took a feed from the landing lights after the switch, so as to avoid having to rip up floors, walls etc).

I happened to be going to a pub opposite Wickes for dinner tonight, I got an angled Batton lamp holder, and this thing.. https://www.wickes.co.uk/Loftleg-LED-Loft-Bulb---40W/p/252418

Just plugged in under the stairs for now to see how bright, blimey, its mental!

My Dad has some cable from an old lawn mower extension and I have a new plug, so, some cable clips and I should be set.

    Top little thingy!
