Another Self assessment query, do i have nothing to pay for my self assessment?

hi all, as hard i try to to understand tax and self assessment i struggle literally everytime im on the website and try to google items i dont understand.

I just thought i'd check my self assessment  that I submitted in June 2021 and its showing on one screen that total due by 21st January at £1424.60, but then on the other screens i that payment has been made from a earlier tax payment so its a 0.   Not sure how this self assessment ive been so efficient or its a mistake.   i did click on the pay tax bill thinking it might auto populate but its still 0.

  • It would appear not and that you have perhaps made payments on account - is this the case?Click on the purple ‘less payments already made’ - that should clarify matters.
  • Or is it going to be collected via your 2022:23 tax code?

They’re not underpayments but a payment that you have made of £5451.30. Was this made in January 2021 and, presumably, more than was required? Change that drop down menu to 5 April 2020 to clarify. Or, more likely, is it possible that you paid the payment on account in January 2021 which was due on 31 July 2021 in addition to that which was due in January 2021? ie you paid both payments on account for 2020/21 in January 2021 - it looks like it!

OK - I may have an explanation. You had a balance to pay of £3557.40 for 2019/20 and a payment on account of half that £1778.70 for 2020/21 - all due In January 2021. It seems that you may have paid £5451.30 - not that far off! Your bill for 2020/21 becomes £1424.60 and the £1778.70 more than covers this so nothing to pay. You can confirm this by answering my previous question.
In the meantime check your latest statement - a tab somewhere on the left hand side. There should still be a balance owed to you. All suppositions - but reasoned!

OK - I was correct in my previous post. From that post you were required to pay £3557.40 for 2019/20 plus half that for 2020/21. That totals £5336.10. For some reason you paid £5451.30 - £115.20 too much. HMRC added £1.15 interest and repaid you £116.35 on 15th April 2021.

Your bill for 2020/21 becomes £1424.60 and the £1778.70 paid in January 2021more than covers this so nothing to pay. In fact it is £354.10 too much and HMRC issued a repayment to you for exactly this amount on 25th June 2021.

So you are clear - it was all sorted in June 2021. Relax!

PS - you didn’t have to make a second payment on account of £1778.70  in July 2021 as you submitted your return early. This reset the payments to £712.30. While this is always recommended it probably added to your confusion.

thankyou so much for walking through this for my simple brain.   Really appreciate you taking the time out to help.   No idea i or why i paid what i did but i have been putting money aside each month and now have a little in the account ahead of the following tax year which great.
