Selling small, unwanted items for small sums was the foundation of Ebay 1997.

Now too inquisitive and much too risky to give the family bank details, to a stranger, so that we can sell an unwanted item, to someone for 5 quid.

If you are only going to sell a £5 item occasionally then regardless of what is needed it hardly seems worth the effort. I sell both as a business and privately and accept that I need to provide ID wherever I sell , I’ve supplied info to eBay , and Amazon and in a more limited form to Etsy.

Incidentally you don’t have to use an established family bank account, many people have opened a new basic bank account purely for eBay.

I wouldn’t think of eBay as a stranger. It’s a massive corporation and I’m sure there’s plenty of them who already have your bank details.

The regulations imposed have changed somewhat. Not Ebay's choice as incurs them additional costs to implement.
