What are these drain covers for?

I am buying a house and on the drain and water search, the only pipes that come remotely close to the house are the water pipes but they are not located on the property? The sewer drains flow across the rear corner of the property.
The foul drainage manhole is in the road and the water meter is on the pavement.

Can anyone let me know what they are for?

  • It would be much easier to answer if you take some closer up pictures from above so we can read any writing on them, and give us some dimensions.

Or lift the covers and let us (and you!) see what is beneath.

Unfortunately these are from Street view. The only way I could go back is to arrange another viewing or trespass when I see the car out 🤣

Have you tried sending a query via your solicitor or the EA? If the sellers don't know you could ask them to lift the covers and take a picture.

An incoming water pipe must come to the property. Otherwise you won't have any water in the house.

My guess would be the ones in the street are either water meters or stopcocks. You would have to lift the cover to check though.

The one on the drive looks a bit big for either of those. Could be a number of things under there. Easy to check, or just ask the owners.

If the area has been cabled for cable TV, one of them is likely to be for that, maybe previous occupants got connected up.

Some towns and cities are recipients of fibre network installed by City Fibre. Maybe that.

Put it this way; if you don't find out what they are, will it stop you buying the house?

I know this isn't the main point behind your question - but if you want to make the inspection covers in your drive less prominent, you could investigate replacing them with recessed ones, like this:

From what we can see on the photos, they all look like simple sewer connection / change of direction.  Hard to tell, though, from the photos.

Best to ask the vendor, or arrange to go and have a look.

Thanks. No. I'll buy it regardless 🤣 at least whatever they are are not under the house, so that's all good.
Be interesting to see what they are once I move it 👍
