The eBay global shipping program is quoting 50USD for a pair of shoes, which seems excessive. I have a checked Royal Mail prices for postage to the US and it is around 10-12GBP which seems about right. I then tried USPS calculator and it was quoting about 42USD :/ I am puzzled by the difference. I tried gooogling but found mainly discussions about cars/motocycles or some business-related stuff. I remember buying shoes from the US some years ago and the postage was about 15-20USD.
Perhaps I am not seeing something?

I'm a little confused as you quote both UK and US postage- are you the buyer or seller?

IME, postage from the US to the UK is far, far more expensive than postage from UK to the US. The two are not comparable in any way.

Agreed.  A light, large letter tends to be $15 then skyrockets with anything larger or heavier.

Is there any sensible reason for that?

I am the buyer. I was expecting the postage from UK to US and from US to UK to cost approximately the same. I see no sensible reason for the difference.

USPS and Royal Mail are separate companies.

They each will have different costs in getting mail from A to B.

USA is much bigger geographically for a start and will have much higher staff numbers to pay wages for.
  • It's Donald Trump's fault, he threatened that USA would leave the UPU so they agreed that USPS could charge whatever they wanted for overseas postings.

The USA has always had higher postage rates . Why there should be any correlation between sovereign nations postage I can’t comment- but if you want to see inequality look at how little the Chinese sellers are paying to ship vast amounts of things into the Uk which end up in the hands of RM.

Agree US to UK postage is stupidly expensive,  I was after a leatherman Wave which was over £100 in the UK.

Found some stores in the US with them on offer for $50,  most would not post to the UK but the ones that did wanted
almost $50 to post to the UK.  $50 for a small pocket multitool/knife so $50 for some shoes seems like a bargain.

Quite mad when I bought something large and bulky from China that cost £15 postage and actually passed through the
USA postal hubs.  One parcel got delayed and tracked to graceland, must have stopped off for some sightseeing.
