Is it to compensate the loss of the vehicle ? or to put you back into the position you would have been had it not happened.

Personally I think it is to restore you to your pre accident position , that position was driving a 2015 Toyota Avensis, if the equivalent car needs to be delivered then that is included surerly ?
The OP ultimately needs to have a conversation with the TPI given they are claiming directly from them, both sides have duties when it comes to claims and ultimately the courts do see a certain element of "life sucks" when it comes to these things as you'll never see sizable awards for "inconvenience" or personal time it takes to have to deal with a claim.

£300 seems a lot to me and I'm sure they could get to the dealership and back for less but then this is where they start showing they are doing their bit on mitigating their losses.

There is often horsetrading involved too... the OP may be in hire or claiming LOU which can end earlier if they get the replacement vehicle quicker which they can do if the insurer pays for it etc etc

What car you then choose to buy and from where is then your free choice.  There is no change to the insurance settlement whether you buy a £500 car from next door or a £500k car from Australia.
Off topic and I apologise, but my first day in Australia, I was walking into Central Sydney (neat Town Hall Station) when I saw a Merc with UK Numberplates go past on the back of a flatbed lorry. (Nearly the opposite of above example).
May you find your sister soon Helli.

"a certain element of "life sucks""

Insurance companies will work on the theory of paying the very very least they can get away with, I was down £2,000 on a non fault accident involving a Direct Line customer, they bullied and lied and effectively drove me into submission with needing to move on with life and sort the car. It's frustrating when you chose a quality insurance product and then get hit by someone effectively uninsured.
