It saves Ebay having to set up their own financial services which is quite costly and takes years. On the subject of getting a credit card, the MSE eligibility checker is quite good and if there is eligibility will put you on the right path.
Capital One is pretty good at offering a relatively low credit start for those with poor credit rating but increasing it as time passes and it's managed well. The other I can think of is Aqua. As Martin Lewis is prone to always point out, on the high percentage credit cards make sure you pay it off in full each month.

Basic Bank Account is a specific product and not one you had from the details given in your OP.

Might it be worth you & hubby getting a free credit report to see if anything looks amiss?
Just thinking there may have been some outside fraud activity that spooked HSBC into the wrong conclusion?I do hope that you get some answers and your accounts reinstated.
Even if they are I'd highly recommend opening another account somewhere else and putting some money in it, it's never a good idea to have all accounts in one bank not just because of issues like this but technical failures etc.3 -
Well following four days of trying to get answers from the bank with no success, complaint has been responded to in the usual way with "we don't care, go to the Ombudsman". We have two months to organise new accounts but they have already cut off third party access to the OH's account - the one the eBay payouts are sent to. So maybe that is what has sparked the review and although they are on the list of banks that accept the agreement maybe they are not happy with it now. Either way they have messed us right up! To think in the old days of the Midland they were "The Listening Bank"!!1
