Both my kids want to listen to BBC sounds app at night (they are in separate rooms), what are the cheapest devices to get for this purpose? My wife and I usually let them have it playing on our phones but I'd rather find another way to do this without spending a fortune. Can anyone advise me please as I have no clue when it comes to technology. Many thanks.

Do they have any devices that they are allowed in their rooms already?

  • Using the BBC Sounds app via a smart speaker such as something like Alexa / Echo dot may be the cheapest solution but whether you want them to have access to everything Alex offers is a matter for you to decide.

No, they're 6&7 so they've not got any devices.

If you're happy with smart speakers then the cheapest Amazon devices are often discounted down to 15 quid or so. Will play live and on-demand BBC programmes/podcasts as well as all the other stuff that Alexa can do.

Sorry for the silly question but how does this work? Is there like a central control somewhere or would it just be a case of buying a speaker for each bedroom? Is there any way of restricting what they could access? They only need it for helping them to get to sleep.

The Alexa / Amazon / Echo smart speakers are voice controlled individually, you would buy a speaker for each room and add them to your amazon account. Your child would say "Play ....."

I fairly sure that when you set them up on your Amazon account, you can apply parental controls to the specific speakers in their bedrooms.

I've not used said functions but I'm aware they exist so you may need to do a little research on that to confirm what I have said about the parental controls.

Thanks, I'll look into this and see, it sounds like it might be the best idea.
