Insuring 17 year old learner driver

Advice appreciated…

Our 17 year old daughter is learning to drive and looking to take her out with me in my car.

I’ve comprehensive insurance with QuoteMeHappy and I’m wondering what our options are.

1. Is she covered to any extent on my insurance without being a named driver on my QuoteMeHappy insurance? As they’re an online only insurer it’s tricky to speak to a human to find out!

2. Do I have to put her as a named driver to go out with me on my insurance?

3. Is it better to take out learner driver insurance such as with Collingwood / Marmalade?

Any advice appreciated but particularly to query 1. above.

Thanks in advance.

She'll need to be insured and it's unlikely you have a policy for any driver under 25 with a provisional licence.

As per other comments, she'll need to be a named driver on your policy.

That really should cost much at all.  Its when she gets her test that the additional charge will go up significantly as at that point she can drive unsupervised.
  • Just found out that QuoteMeHappy only insure age 21+ so can’t register her on my insurance.

We’ll explore learner driver insurance I think.
  • A friend used Adrian Flux, they do learner insurance in your DD's name, you can do it on a month to month basis or for a set time 3,6 or 12 months. I'm sure others offer it as well

Pay for proper lessons instead, the test may have changed since you passed and you may teach her
    something different to the instructor.

With the exception of a few farmer's children the learners I've known to pass fastest are those who have taken lessons and driven with a family member. Avoiding passing on bad habits is important but so is having adequate driving time to experience a range of roads and conditions.

The OP said "Our 17 year old daughter is learning to drive and looking to take her out with me in my car.". He isn't planning to teach her.

We used a top up policy that covered our son driving the car for practice and was separate to our main policy. We'd seen maramlade but this one was called Covered on Demand.
