In August 2007, he suffered a stroke and was admitted to hospital. Shortly after, he contracted C-Diff. He has been in isolation ever since. 5 weeks ago, he got MRSA. He now weighs 6 stone.

Quite frankly, I'd get him out of there ASAP.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Oo-er. So would I - and today! Assuming, of course, that where he was before is willing to have him back without a risk of infection spreading to other residents and staff.

In order to develop both these infections, he must have been given antibiotics which killed off the 'good' bugs which kept the others in check. Why was he given them - for a stroke?

Margaret, yes, Dad had a stroke in July 2007. Prior to then, he was a resident in a care home. Active, happy and very mobile. Able to wash, dress and feed himself. Weighed 11 stone plus. Could talk for England! Loved it when I took my grandson, Harry, out to see him. Funny thing, he knew Harry by name but couldn't remember his daughters name. That used to make me chuckle! One day I took my sister out to see Dad. He asked me, "Who is that? Is that your mother?" Then he called after Harry by name. How strange is that?

I had contact from the discharge nurse earlier today. Dad has been clear of C-Diff for 5 days now and should be ready for discharge very soon. The social worker asked me to contact Nursing homes in and around my area. I did this but I keep thinking to myself, why bother with other homes! If his "old" care home are happy to have him, why bother looking elsewhere. So tomorrow, I will contact Knights Grove an ask for Dad to be seen prior to admission and to hell with the cost.

Thanks to all who have offered advice:T

That's the spirit! It's possible that he'll get full funding anyway, and if he doesn't now he may later when his funds get down to the level where the council would start to support him anyway. I am sure he will be better off in at least a partly familiar place than starting all over again somewhere else. Hope they have a space for him! THAT is the other potential problem!

There is a time for keeping an eye to the future, but I'm not sure this is one of them ...

  • Norman_B - sorry your family is having such a tough time at the moment. Yes, if your dad runs out of money and SS fund, he could have to move into a cheaper home if there is one available in the area, if there is not - you can challenge.
Wishing you all the best - please contact Age Concern in your area for some support and advice.

Hi folks, an update. My dad was finally granted(?) funding from the local PCT. He is still in hospital but we hope he might be discharged to the Nursing home, in the next few days! He is now able to take a teaspoon of jelly/custard daily and has started to talk again. He has finally got over C-Diff but still has MRSA.
His ward has been closed for the past 10 days with the Noro' virus. So, after 6 months in the General, we hope it will only be days before he's discharged.

Thanks for all the advice and PM's.
