Chip and Pin Fraud

  • When you spoke to Starling what date & time did they say the actual transaction was made & what type of retailer?

While @eskbanker is correct on a prompt refund. A Chip & Pin in the area at the time you are there, as well as only 1 unknown transaction would be enough to withhold a refund.
If someone went to the expense of creating a counterfeit card (& never seen any cases in the UK in over 15 years) they would not stop at one transaction.

Think about it. You have a counterfeit card, what do you do. make one purchase or take a trip to a ATM and get the daily limit, day after day till it stops?

Not the actual hotel you were staying at is it?

The transaction was at 17-50pm on Monday 4th October. At that time, I was on a coach returning to our hotel in Dundalk County Louth. My card was in my wallet, which I had on the coach
Despite requesting this information, Starling has not named any retailer other than saying it was a chip and pin transaction and was for food and drink.
The hotel does not use SumUp for its transactions.

A few years ago I had an American Express card. My account was billed for a meal ironically this was in Ireland .
I disputed this as I could prove where I was at the time and they refunded me.

So did you buy anything either on the coach or before you got on? Or even on the way to Ireland either on a flight or however you got there? As sometimes date & time relates to when the transactions were uploaded off the terminal?

The thing with Chip & Pin is it needs the card to make the transaction.

No one is going to the cost & trouble to make just one purchase. They would hammer a ATM to get cash.

    No, nothing was purchased.
I think it was a glitch, but I am unable to prove anything as neither  the bank nor SumUp as of yet has provided me with any other information other than for food and drink

With a Chip & Pin transaction the only info bank gets is as provided by retailer & Catsic code (type of retailer) While bank can request further info from retailer. They do not have to provide the information due to the way the transaction was processed.

What description does it give on your statement?
