Hi
I purchased a weather station for £250 in December 2019, it’s now faulty and the manufacturer just said, you have a fault but if you want to buy a newer model, they will give me £25 discount (which still makes it more expensive than being sold elsewhere)

Am I being reasonable by saying it’s not fit for purpose after only 2 years?

Not really sure where to go now ….

Thanks

Depends on the fault. Did you purchase direct from the manufacturer? If not, then you have no claim against them, only the retailer. As the item is over six months old, you need to prove via a report that the item was inherently faulty. If the report highlights this, then you can claim the cost of the report back along with a remedy - repair, replace or refund. The choice is the retailers and a refund can be partial taking into account the two years use you have had.

    Thank you for your reply.
The fault is that the outside unit no longer registers on the indoor unit.
    It was bought via Amazon.
Not sure what you mean by a report? The manufacturer has told me it’s faulty.

Go back to the retailer with that information, althoùgh be prepared that Amazon may challenge you to show that the fault is an inherent one, rather than one that's a result of user error or misuse.

£250 is expensive for an indoor / outdoor weather station.

I have had several of these items - cheap and expensive - and now concluded to buy a cheap one and treat them as disposable consumable items.  Not easy to do with a £250 product.

However much the product retails for, they are units of mass-produced built to price components and actually the outdoor modules have a harsh environment dealing with extremes of temperature and water.  It is quite easy for the seals to degrade over a couple of years, that lets some moisture in and then the cold weather kills it.  Also, in the cold weather, the batteries struggle.  (I seem to find much the same with the door bell push button.)

What I have done with mine in the past is to bring the whole lot inside, remove all the batteries and put it all in the airing cupboard overnight.  Then fully reset everything and use all new batteries.  Sometimes that works, sometimes it does not.  With a £250 unit it is worth a try - I wouldn't bother with my current unit as it was cheap-as-chips and I would now just go for a new cheapo unit from an online retailer.

Hope you can get the unit working again.  Do let us know how you get on.

Sadly, a couple of years seems to be about the most these types of units really last based on my experience.  In fact, that seems to be the par for modern consumer electronics - just look at how many people gladly splash out on a new iPhone every couple of years.  Those that expect longevity seem to be a dying breed.

I would concur with above. I gave up on the outdoor part (inside ones last ages)
if you want the outdoor one, then get a cheap one as none of them last in this country.

  • Lidl are currently selling a basic one with outdoor temperature and humidity sensor for a tenner.

I’ve just bought one and it seems to working fine, if it lasts two years I’ll be happy.

My daughter has one of the Lidl cheapies.  It is three years old and no issues.  The external sensor sits in the meter box outside which acts in a similar way to a Stevensons screen.

Have you tried bringing the outdoor unit inside for a while.  I had a cheapo system where the outside unit stopped working.  I brought the outside unit in, simply to get details from it to try to source a replacement.  It was left inside for a few days and suddenly the info from it started to show on the master unit.  It continued to work for about a year after that.
