Consumer rights? Can hotel cancel my booking if I don’t prepay?

I booked a hotel package for an event (happening at the hotel) for one night (it’s a Hilton hotel if that matters)

I booked through a member of staff at the hotel but the whole thing seemed a bit convoluted and messy and I wasn’t sure I actually had a confirmed booking until I emailed Hilton customer service and they sent me the details including an email with my confirmation which confirmed my booking. 

when discussing it with someone else attending i discovered they had to pay at the time of booking, I was concerned since I hadn’t paid yet my booking wasn’t 100% so I contacted Hilton customer service again and was told i would have to provide a credit card on check in and pay on check out and that my booking was definitely confirmed. 

Fast forward three months and I’ve just had an email today (Wednesday 5th of January) from the member of staff I initially dealt with, the email said;
“I am reaching out to you with regards to the outstanding payment due for X event and room on X date.
I have sent the payment link for the payment to be made by Friday 7th January 2022. If payment is not made by this time, your reservation will be cancelled.”

Can a confirmed booking be canceled if I don’t prepay despite being told It was confirmed and I didn’t have to prepay?

i don’t have a problem pre paying in theory, but with 24 hours notice just after Christmas it’s going to be a stretch.

    Yes, they can cancel the room, unless you have anything in writing from Hilton (T&C's) stating different.
