Obscene hike

My current fixed rate deal ends today and my existing supplier offered me a new deal which is £200 EXTRA per month. I tried several other Provider’s and they were all more expensive.  How can they expect me to pay £2400 per year extra. This would make my energy bill £3,600 a year!!!

  • I assume you have been watching the news the last few months, energy prices have shot up, it should be no shock to you.

Post the unit rates of what you have been offered please.

Don't take the fixed deal and you'll just roll on to their standard variable tariff which will work out cheaper until April

Just to clarify, it wont work out cheaper than what he is CURRENTLY paying, but almost certainly cheaper than what he has been offered.

Yes thank you for that - of course I’m aware but I don’t know anyone around me that has such a ridiculous price hike - almost 3 x my existing rate.  I am now on the default rate.
  • Mine went up 88%.  A lot of the fixed they will be offering will be obscene, but turn them all down and you go on the variable, which it looks like you have done anyway.

The huge % increase is probably a sign that you were on a very good rate before.

I found a fix the other day with EDF which would be more than 4 X what I was paying prior to the collapse of Neon Reef and Zog !!

This was one quote I got from EDF after having looked out of interest - this was for a 12-month fix. (Based on their estimated use for a one-bed flat, though thankfully my usage is nowhere near these levels). 51p per unit for electricity!

Possibly combined with not paying enough to cover all that were using too.  At the time when tariffs end, suppliers often re-assess the account and may well also decided that the OP was using more fuel than their original DD was based on.  There could also be a deficit to clear.

The only true figure to base it on, is to take a typical annual usage figure and multiply it by the tariff figures and divide by 12 and round it up a bit to cover contingencies/cold snaps etc.and allowing for any potential debit on the account.

Reading this forum over many years, it's evident that a lot of people just concentrate on the monthly DD number, without relating it to how much fuel they actually use and the price of both that fuel and the daily standing charge, along with any credit or debit on the account.

Ouch, if the cap in April ends up being near those figures then a lot of people are going to be using candle light for both lighting and heating !
Best buy some additional jumpers now before there's a mad panic for them.
