Eurotunnel refunds - France travel ban

I’m aware that some members have managed to obtain a refund from Eurotunnel for standard (non-refundable) tickets earlier in the pandemic by claiming particular personal circumstances and quoting Competition and Marketing Authority regulations.

I was wondering whether anyone has more recently been successful, especially given France’s current refusal to allow UK citizens to enter for reasons of tourism (even if the ultimate destination is not France). My original ticket was purchased in 2019, before the pandemic, for travel in June 2020 but postponed twice due to lockdown.

I’ve been given two ticket extensions (by way of goodwill gesture vouchers), one for last year which again was postponed and the most recent to travel later this year but with lingering uncertainty over travel by road through France to other destinations, I’d rather get a full £170 refund and try again when things are back to normal. The idea of paying to upgrade to a refundable ticket doesn’t impress me if only the upgrade element is refundable.

My original travel insurance (provided free through my bank) did not cover Covid-related cancellations, but at the time of the first lockdown, this didn’t bother me because I expected to travel the following year. The bank have now stopped this free insurance and although my new (paid for) insurance covers future Covid-related cancellations, I obviously can’t claim retrospectively.

Travel through France by land currently is restricted to those with EU citizenship or EU residency from the UK, and France as an independent nation has the right to set its own entry requirements, which it has chosen to do.
