Thank you Life in the slow lane that is a very helpful suggestion.  I could ask for another card alongside my credit card 'for him' however, it would still involve payment at the end of the month from my account, and I wonder whether that would square up with s.75 protection.
Many thanks dr_addidas01.  That certainly gives me something to work with

S75 has no reference to who pays the bill only the three way relationship between the debtor (the account holder), the creditor (the card issuer) and the Supplier (the company providing the goods or service).

The chain is most commonly broken when there is no relationship between the debtor and supplier (eg you pay with your card but the invoice is in the name of your son) or if there is another party in the chain (eg using a PayPal account adds a layer between the creditor and supplier or travel agent between you and the hotel)

Ultimately your son gives you the money and you then pay the credit card company... how would that be materially different to your employer giving you the money (ie wages) and you paying the credit card company? Take it a step further as the employers money has come from goods/services they've sold etc.

Ordering something 'for me' paid for by 'my' card which is then paid for out of my son's bank account over which I have Power of Attorney might quite reasonably be considered very questionable if subjected to scrutiny by social care agencies.  I really try to keep his financial affairs separate from mine
