I contacted the carpet company and received apologies that this was a new payment system etc and they had failed to push a button to make the payments go live which notifies Hitachi to take the payments.

The carpet company have simply now said this was a genuine mistake and there is nothing else they can do.

Anyways, I would like to ask other people on this forum what are your opinions on this?
Sorry but I disagree with some comments as the onus is on the retailer/finance company to collect the payments, I shouldn't have to check the payments after signing the direct debit agreement.

I signed a one year agreement.

And you still have a one year agreement. Just starts a bit later than expected due to a human error.
Company have admitted their error & given you £50 to cover that error.

Of course it is your responsibility to check your account. If you knew it was due to start in Aug. Then from your below statement you would have realised that payment was not taken, and could have sorted it at that. I guess that is also a HUMAN error, just the same as the company not pressing the button.
Obviously I am quite angry because the one year agreement starts from December 2021 and not August 2021 which is an inconvenience to me because I like to plan my finances ahead.

It would only affect your credit rating if there were any missed payment. Which there have not been.
As it is a finance agreement you could complain to them. But do not expect any joy in getting payments written off. If it then went to FOS they would say the same. Human errors happen & you then failed to highlight the issue at the time.
Reason being Finance company have not made any mistakes.

This is one of those threads.

"What are people's opinions on this?  Any advice greatly appreciated."

*gets fair and lawfully correct consumer rights advice, and some reasonable views on the situation*

    "NOT LIKE THAT!"
Usually followed up with an update:

They refunded in full with compensation as they understood that it was not my error and therefore not my fault.

You say you like to keep on top of your finances, yet the above comment in bold contradicts this.  Do you not check your bank statements?

The company has given you £50 for absolutely nothing - did you go to your local rag and put your best compo face on?

Well if you like to plan your finances ahead then you will have five months extra payments in your bank as you would have planned to pay it from August. So you can use that extra money to pay the agreement off early and it won't make any difference to you.

Hmmmmm... the bit in bold is confusing me. You like to plan finances ahead but didn't spot that the direct debit hadn't come out.

Also, if you like to plan your finances, then surely the 5 months worth of payments not taken will be just sitting in your account, so you can just pay them as a lump sum off the debt then continue the payments as originally planned?

Take the £50 and keep quiet! It's far more than you're entitled to!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Thank you all.

By the way planning finances ahead means looking forward not backwards.

Again the onus is on the finance company to collect payments not me checking every time doing their job for them.

Once I sign a finance agreement they have permission to collect the money for X amount for X amount of time.

    Appreciate all the sarcastic answers..

Yes, as others have said, it does seem a bit contradictory to say you like to plan your finances ahead but did not notice that the Direct Debit was not operating.

I do understand though because before I had to have a DRO to sort out my own finances, I wouldn't have noticed either. I didn't open bank or credit card statements and ignored all things financial. Things caught up with me and since my DRO - which ended in its entirety three years ago, I have been a bank account overchecker. (That isn't a real word - or is it). I check my current account at least four times a week - sometimes if I'm honest, briefly every day - and now have the app on my phone. Because - human error. Could be mine, could be someone else's.

It doesn't appear that you have anything to be angry or unduly concerned about and you've gained £50 into the bargain. Just enjoy your cosy new carpet and save your ire for something really serious.
