I hope that doesn't mean too many doors being left open and freezing drafts. On the positive side there's the feeling of relief when they go away again, and the bonus of freezer space!Changeyourlife25 said:Have workmen starting on the house tommorow so plan on making up a load of sarnies for the kids, most of the house will be out of action.
We've finished up our big pot of tikka and made a start on the home made mincemeat. DH had bought a vegan 'cheese' to try and loathes it, but I found it very umami and keep eating more, which will slow down progress on the various cheeses I need to eat while they are edible. I've also finished one of the boxes of fruit teas and can see the current bag of Christmas coffee slowly deflating!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I made celeriac and sweet potato soup today for lunch which was very tasty. We both had some bread and cheese with it as we've ended up with a lot in the fridge from Xmas. I also made a big pot of veggie chilli which will do a couple of evening meals. It used 3 tins of different beans plus onion, garlic, swede, sweet potato, mushrooms and squash. There's still quite a lot of swede and squash left so I'll have to think of something else for that.

I'm accidentally following your example @LotsOfTea - I've turned a jug full of cheap-at-Christmas parsnips into spicy parsnip soup and added some yogurt that I made last week to use up milk. I'm eating half the soup right now and the rest can be lunch another day. I also turned to sloes picked on a walk the other day into sloe gin. I gather it's on the late side to be picking sloes and they are much softer than I expected but hey! Gin is gin. There's plenty left in the bottle so if I come across more sloes, I may well top up the mixture (leaving some for the birds, of course).I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Enjoy your sloe gin @Cherryfudge! This time of year when Xmas is over and it's freezing is exactly when we all need some nice things to cheer us up and keep the spirits warm.
I made some curry-flavoured squash soup as well this afternoon to use up most of the rest of the big squash. It came out tasting so sweet and creamy I had to add a few squeezes of lemon juice to freshen it up a bit but it'll be another tasty lunch option this week.5 -
Enjoyed some brie with olives and baby gherkins for last nights tea courtesy of Olio. Was able to freeze lots of brie thanks to the party bits that came through after the new year.
Today I had some trout from the freezer with potato salad and butterhead lettuce. Was delicious. DH and DS had some jerk chicken wraps from the freezer for their dinner.
I've got some sliced tongue in the freezer that I'll have for tea with a panini (all Olio items from the new year). I've cancelled my shopping slot as their seems nothing that I need other than milk so we'll just pick that up from Farmfoods. Not much wiggle space in the freezer as yet but its will soon go down if we're not shopping.JANUARY GROCERY CHALLENGE £23.30/£150

The freezer side of my fridge-freezer has developed a fault again which means that the top part of it doesn't get cold and things start to defrost. We've had it fixed twice before (the last time about a year ago) and I think since it's now about 12 years old we're going to have to give in and buy a new one. In the meantime it also means a panic eating up of anything on the top two shelves.
DH made a start by having some breaded cod for lunch and I'll give some to DS for his tea tonight. I'll have a look and see what's veggie that needs using up but it might be some of the chorizo style chunks that I could add to the veggie chilli I've got in the fridge. Slightly too soft ice cream will be for pudding.5 -
We bought sausages so I made Toad in the Hole tonight in an attempt to use OOD ingredients. The eggs are mostly used, as are the ends of two packets of flour and I've started on some long life milk. I had to throw away an opened long life milk that we'd forgotten.
To make further inroads into the above and some margarine that's lasted longer than intended, I made a batch of fairy cakes and topped them with some salted caramel topping that's been in the cupboard too long. I have to say, this was spectacularly not a success! Instead of making sweet middles to the cakes as it cooked, the caramel partly sank in and partly spilled over the surface, forming an unbreakable layer of toffee-like substance stuck to the paper cases. The bit that got into the cake seems to have sunk as far down as it could but met the cooked base of the cake, spread laterally and curved up parallel to the edges so the cooked middles were sitting in a sort of cup of artificial-tasting vaguely caramel stuff. 7/10 for dramatic effect, 1/10 for applied science.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. Have waved goodbye to the last of the holiday guests so am starting in earnest to run down the freezer. Today I have used a piece of left over beef up. I diced half of it and put it in the leftover gravy with some mushrooms and will make a pie later and the other half I diced up and made into a chilli for tomorrow. A very small space cleared for two meals but it's a start.5
