Tuna steaks for dinner. I don't really like tuna but these were gifted to me a couple of years ago now and have languished in the freezer. I needed something fast so these were sliced thin and have defrosted in a marinade of soya sauce and olive oil and lemon juice and will be quickly fried and served with the marinade over a bag of mixed leaves from the local shop.    I'm adding potatoes as the boyfriend will be here and hungry I'm sure.

We finished up the soup and curry we brought with us on our break and the soft fruit from the y/s haul the other day, and DH has finished the chips from Tuesday’s takeaway! I’m pleased with myself for finally finishing the vegan yogurt bought for my sister’s visit at the end of July! It was all right, honest.

In: loads of apples as we have permission to gather from the garden where we are staying. Not all are ripe yet so plenty will be left for the birds.

The tuna steaks were as horrible as I thought.  My taste buds have changed as I have got older I am sure.  I didn't eat mine but boxed it up and the boyfriend will eat as a lunch  at some point.

Borlotti bean soup/stew tonight with the remains of the home made bread to dunk in it,

    Home again.

In - about three carrier bags of apples (left loads that were too high/unripe).

Out - half pack of sausages, some home-grown tomatoes and a jar of sauce - makes enough sausage pasta for tomorrow as well.

In: various store cupboard items: lentils, onions, sweetcorn etc.

Out: made some bread using rye flour and some anonymous white flour that needed to be finished, and flavoured with some dried up cheddar, sundried tomatoes and some of the flavoured oil from a jar of peppers. I also made a toast topper (does anyone remember those? Or are they even still around?) with mushrooms for lunch. Plenty left for another day too.

  • The bread sounds lovely @Cherryfudge

I decided yesterday to make some tiffin-type stuff to send in DS's lunchbox this week. I haven't made it in ages but I was fairly sure I had the digestives I needed in the cupboard and I knew I had all the other ingredients. I found a packet of digestives, opened it, gagged at the stale fat smell and then noticed that they went out of date in 2020! They went straight in the food waste and although I didn't have time yesterday to sort the cupboard out they came from I'm going to do it today. I'm sure I'm going to find other out of date horrors. Honestly, I'm mad at myself for being so disorganised. I'm finally doing something about it and getting a grip though so I should focus on the positive side. I did find a packet of chocolate oaties that were very much in date that worked fine as a sub for the digestives and the tiffin is delicious so I got there in the end.

Shame about the digestives, @LotsOfTea: I am capable of keeping things far too long in a kitchen cupboard too (as in the pinhead oats that I found the other week and were from memory around 8 years old)!

Thank you for mentioning tiffin, it would be a really nice treat here and also enable me to use up dried fruit and nuts. I might even invest in chocolate oaties for it, they sound perfect.

Dinner today will be fish in breadcrumbs, probably with cous cous and various veg from the freezer. The bread is filling - a slice of it for breakfast saw me through till lunch.
