Increased payment taken via PayPal after completing transaction

I placed an order yesterday from a large retailer and paid using the PayPal option at checkout as I thought this was safer than giving my credit card details. I was taken through to PayPal, signed in and authorised the payment.
This morning I've had an email from PayPal saying the vendor has updated the amount. PayPal has paid it without me having to authorise it again.
I wasn't aware they could do this, it's never happened before and it worries me. It's the first time I've use this vendor and I haven't signed any continuous authority with them. It was only pennies but in theory it could've been any amount. Surely this isn't right?

Check the terms and conditions of the PayPal service.

What was the reason for the price discrepancy?

No reason given. I haven't heard anything from the vendor, just this message from PayPal:

You approved an authorisation to xxx on 2 January 2022 for £81.16 GBP. xxx has updated the total amount of your transaction. Your new total is £81.17 GBP. See below for details.

It's only 1p but it's the principle that concerns me.

Probably just a rounding issue. I would find something else to get concerned about.

I've not set up a billing agreement or any other automatic charges from my account as mentioned in the PayPal user agreement.
    However if the following terms

"When you pay certain sellers or pay for certain purchases (for instance, purchases which have to be shipped to you or may be updated and finalised by the seller), you are providing:

    • An authorisation to the seller to collect your payment at a later time.
    • An instruction to us to automatically pay that seller when the seller requests payment."
mean that any seller can take further payments without notice for 30 days (as most Paypal transactions are for online purchases which need to be shipped!) then why have we not been warned about this? Also "certain sellers" seems a very vague term and is not defined anywhere that I can see.
