Operation in Turkey

My wife is travelling to Turkey in a few months for gastric bypass surgery

We looked at the private hospitals in the UK but it's upwards of £10000

Turkey is around 3000 plus flights

My concern is if the worst was to happen am I covered under life insurance

I can't call the insurance until Tuesday as it's bank holiday weekend

Life insurance is taking into account of conditions prior to policy commencement. Anything after policy start date will not make the policy void.

Medical insurance is something where you must declare any new conditions on renewal

Life assurance won't be affected unless it's newly taken out. The issue will be with medical/repatriation cover on your travel insurance.

It's medical insurance for the wife which should be the main concern, not life insurance for if there is a bad outcome from the surgery.

    Have you shopped around?
my niece had it done for £7k in bath/Bristol which is not a particularly cheap area.

3k is still cheap though and alot of dough to save.

travel insurance as above maybe an issue if complications arise

Yes it’s cheap, so are rentals in Afghanistan.
the OP is concerned about death ! Then risk of high bills for medical care or repatriation have been mentioned.
    yes I don’t deny it’s cheap.

if it’s a big name with lots of verifiable reviews and insurance provided then that might mitigate the risks, but otherwise the risks are quite high.

if it’s something someone wants enough and they can afford it then finance could be obtained in the uk.
if they can’t afford then perhaps other measures should be considered. I’m certainly not not underestimating how hard that is but help is available.

yeah to look t all avenues is reasonable. I know people get dental treatment abroad. I have Health insurance myself as I can't afford to be off work for 2 years waiting for a knee placement potentially for example. NHS is generally good for cancer care, everything else is slow.

Health insurance is great but it might not always extend to gastric band surgery.
it depends on the circs and is usually a last resort.
even if it is offered people sometimes have to lower their bmi for it to be clinically safe.

i know someone who’s had it and by and large they are happy although there are various unpleasant side effects related to eating.

im going to try the traditional route but I don’t for one minute underestimate how hard that is.

yeah probably not covered and certainly I know cosmetic is not covered. But mainly have it to skip NHS Queues for more common ailments like knee replacements e.t.c

There is a massive difference between travelling abroad for dental treatment and for invasive surgery.
