When I fitted an alarm at a house where I used to live I fitted "sound bombs" inside which filled the house with such a horrible noise that I don't think any burglar would have been able to stand to be in there. It seemed to me that this was likely to be more effective than the outside sounder which I think many people would just ignore.1
