Bad credit rating

I got refused an egg money card today on an online application. I can only assume that this is because I was referred to a debt collecters by ebay a couple of years ago for a fee that I did not owe. The debt was eventually cancelled but it must have left a black mark on my credit rating. I have never used a credit card so it can't be that.

I found this website that claims you can edit your credit report.

Is this true?

There is no such thing as a "credit repair agency". It is all a big con!

You may have been declined because you have never had a credit card...Catch 22 i know..

The first thing to do is to get your credit report from the 3 main credit agencies. These costs £2 each. Their names are Equifax, Experian and Callcredit. See if there is anything negative on those and then report back here...

Check this link for info on how/where to get the reports (some even for free!!)

Just promise me...do NOT touch any company claiming they can "repair" your credit rating.. No such thing, the only one who can do that is yourself.

Sound advice. Before jumping to conclusions, it would be sensible to check your credit reports. This is the information UK lenders see when you apply for a new credit card (For help, see the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky.) Btw, credit scores are pretty meaningless and not worth paying extra for. The reports themselves are worth
    having though ;)

I would keep an open mind about the reason(s) you were turned down. It's really important to realise, there is NO universal credit rating applicable to all lenders and all products. Lenders score us differently. None of us knows how individual credit card companies view our applications.

Fortunately, there are ways to improve your chances of acceptance next time. For tips, which apply equally to all credit cards, have a look at the *Credit Rating* articles on the main site, in particular, Martin's *Check and Improve your Credit Score* article, before you submit your next credit card application
