iPhone 6 plus

Options
My friend has an iPhone 6 plus that I do not think has any security or anti virus, it is an older phone and is getting sluggish, I was hoping to install some protection.

Looking at AVG and Malwarebytes, would these work on iphone 6 plus, or any other ideas.

Secondary is the phone gets very warm, is there a way to cool down the phone, ( CPU), as there is with my Android phone?

The phone is never turned off.

  • You don’t need any security. Stick to the iOS App Store and keep away from dodgy sites and don’t click on spam emails!

That would make it more sluggish

Maybe remove some of the unused apps and delete some other stuff (photos/videos etc perhaps?)

Never heard of a cooling app - more snake oil!

The phone is never turned off.
Then perhaps turn it off occassionally?

The antivirus on my phone does not slow it down noticeably. It does its scans whilst the phone is idle.

When was your friend's phone last rebooted?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    Not sure, will ask.

Is rebooting same as switching off then turning on again?

    What scans?

There is no antivirus product for iOS devices that actually scans for viruses, it is impossible because they way apps work on iOS they are isolated from each other so it is impossible for one app to see what else is running.

Even if an app was called “dangerous virus” another app on the phone would not be able to even see it was installed.

And apps can’t get anywhere near the operating system files to check whether they are infected with a virus.

Don’t bother wasting money on an antivirus product for an Apple phone, it won’t do what you think it does.

At best, the apps claiming to be AV for iOS provide some browser filtering, notifications about various security settings such as insecure WiFi and maybe a VPN but none of them contain any kind of scanning for signature of known viruses whatsoever.

The best you can do is make sure you are on the latest version of iOS for your phone to make sure any security vulnerabilities are patched.

which it won’t be if it’s an iPhone 6. Well it might be on the latest available for that model, but not the most recent iOS available, as it is no longer a supported phone. I suspect the number of apps which will continue to work on an iPhone 6 might also diminish quite rapidly and the sluggishness is likely due to the battery wearing out (you should be able to check whether the battery health is sufficient to allow for peak performance to continue), so the best route might be to upgrade rather than waste time and money on the current model.

  • I would think there would still be security updates as it’s should still be on iOS 14.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus (released in 2014) only supports up to IOS 12.

The phone might seem sluggish because... well, it's old. CPU demands from apps and websites increase every year, more JavaScript, more data to deal with, etc.
