The only way a shop would give a total refund would be if ti was untouched because it was a duplicate gift before you unpackaged and re-wrapped it.

The good side of this is that there is (or at least was) a respectable mac resale market compared with individual PC brands. They're respected as second-hand items (and I've only ever bought them secondhand myself).

Mac hardware is all standard, as they're all built to a specific spec, so you know pretty much what you're buying, plus the OS is only really designed to work on that hardware (you can run it on non-Mac hardware so to speak, a so-called Hackintosh, and even virtual machines).

As opposed to PC builds that run Windows, there is much more variety in the hardware make-up (no standard, you can mix and match to make it your own), and Windows will just go yeah okay you've got this that and the other, that's cool (be cooler with the right drivers mind), I can work with that.

Some years ago I purchased a Laptop from John Lewis - It was supposedly an *end of range* and new. When I got it home I found it was not.

It had been returned as an unwanted present and very nicely re-boxed.  They could not do enough to apologise and invited me to take my pick - I finished up with a very nice high end machine - No doubt they would be able to trace who returned it and probably take action against the person who claimed it was unused

You don't really know John Lewis do you. Time was they would give you a refund on items that they had never actually stocked let alone sold.
