Moving house - energy tariff advice
Hi all,
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas.
We've just bought our first home and we're moving out of rented accommodation and into it on Jan 14. With the energy price hike, I'm a little lost on what the best approach to energy and gas is.
Our rented place is with E.ON on a Standard SC ROB with a unit rate of 21.78/kWh (I know, I know) and our new place is currently with SSE. I know fixing the price is frowned upon right now but that's what we've been offered with SSE. There is a variable rate - but that hasn't been offered right now.
Any advice on what we should do? I don't really fancy fixing and since it's our first house I'm wary of acting too quickly without seeking advice.
Thanks in advance.

You will need to phone them to get the standard variable capped rate, you will not be able to do it online.

Just send SSE your name, new and old addresses, date of taking possession, opening meter readings (DIY, never rely on anyone else) and DD banking details. Royal Mail may be the least hassle. That's it, you'll automatically be on the SVT the moment you switch something on. Don't sign up to anything else. Make sure you're on the electoral roll at the new address.

Thank you both, will do as you suggest.
Appreciate the help.

SSE are one of the few suppliers who only calculate their bills quarterly, but this does not prevent you having a monthly direct debit payment plan. You may prefer to pay quarterly in arrears to start with until you have a feel for the amounts of energy you are consuming. You can still read your meters monthly and submit the readings online, it just that the billing interval is 3-monthly.0

We are about to enter one of the most challenging periods in recent history when it comes to people paying for their energy; I have to ask why isn’t Ofgem insisting that all energy suppliers offer monthly statements at no extra cost to the consumer: that is monthly bills, no matter how people pay. Octopus’ billing system , for example, produces a statement each time that a meter reading is provided. Three and six monthly billing is in my opinion a step back to the pre-privatisation era.jbuchanangb said:SSE are one of the few suppliers who only calculate their bills quarterly, but this does not prevent you having a monthly direct debit payment plan.
