Like everyone has said, banks love students. With RBS First year students can have an interest free overdraft of £1250 without proof of income, just proof of study on any UCAS course. This can go all the way up to £2500 year on year dependant on the course taken, and the interest free period can be extended with Graduate accounts too.

Original post makes no mention of student - it is the wrong time of year anyway to apply for this type of account.
I can guarantee you now that an 18 year old opening a bank account whilst unemployed and on benefits will not be offered an overdraft facility at account opening.

Hey You are not allowed to make any Debt before you are 18, I know from personal experience, i was not 18 when I started Uni and was not allowed a student account, overdraft or debit card!
