Arnold Clark Servicing

Hello!!

My fiancée has recently bought a car from Arnold Clark (I’d rather she didn’t use them but she did). I’ve just had a look over the car and noticed it only has 10% oil life so I checked the service book and it was due a service a month before she bought it. It has now been 13 months since it’s last service and 10,000ish miles. However, Arnold Clark are saying it’s not due a service until November next year or until she’s done another 8000 miles. I know missing services can void the warranty and to be honest I wouldn’t want to be driving a car with 10% oil life left. I’m going to have a proper look over the car today and check levels to see if there’s any issues but my question is why are Arnold Clark giving different recommendations for services to the manufacturer?

Comments

  • Update: The manufacturers recommendation is service every 2 years or 18,000 miles which is what Arnold Clark have also told her. But she’s been sold a car with 10% oil life on it and the stamp in the service book says next service due Nov 21. I’m thinking that it should be Nov 22 and maybe they just didn’t reset the computer but I can’t be sure of that.
  • What car is it? Ask them to change the service book to say Nov 22 and reset the computer if required.
Where is it saying 10% oil life left?

IIRC Vauxhalls state the percentage.  If the car is a petrol the oil should still be very clean if it was only changed a month ago. If it looks clean have the system reset (you can probably do it yourself, google the issue).

I wouldn't however leave it two years dor servicing., especially if its a turbo.  Once a year for me.

The oil was changed 13 months ago not 1 month ago.
  • If you are that worried just get an oil and filter change. And never see Arnold Clark ever again.

Make of car?  If VAG group then long life services are really only for high (motorway) mileage cars.

Also make sure they use the correct oil.  They will tell that they use the recommended that may be untrue it could be an acceptable alternative that will increase emissions and reduce mpg.

And don't think a search of the marques literature will be of much help it takes a lit of digging.

(Had a 1yo Skoda Kamiq in for its first service and it ended in a bit of a rammy, I eventually got the correct oil)

Is the service schedule definitely 2 years or 18,000 miles? When I had a Vauxhall, it was 12 months or 12,000 miles and looking on the internet, it seems to suggest that full services should be every 24 months and interim services every 24 months, with the effect being that you have a service every 12 months (but appreciate specific models may be different).

Was probably worth checking before buying the car.

Because they do not want to cover the cost of a service as it eats into their profits.  Take the car to a workshop you trust and just get it serviced.  I doubt you will get much satisfaction out of AC and, hopefully your fiancée will not make the mistake of buying from them again.
  • If you do a lot of town driving and stop start driving then decent mechanics would recommend an oil and filter change every 5 thousand miles.
These 24 month intervals are stupid.

Really? Although it won't hurt, IMHO, it's money down the drain and that kind of thinking is outdated - oil & engine tech has moved on since the 1970s
