i’ve stripped the wallpaper but some of the plaster has come away too. I was going to just paint the wall but that won’t work now. Can I wallpaper or will the imperfections show through?

A decent thick lining paper hides all sorts of problems. If you want to avoid lining paper, then you'll need to apply some filler. Easifill would be ideal. Slap it on with a wide scraper and then scrape off the excess immediately. Leave to harden, and give a light sand.
