Return failed and parcel lost because of wrong information from post office

Hello, I made an account to ask for advice on what to do in this situation.
1 month ago I sent a return parcel back to music magpie with their own label but I did not remove the old label. They sent the parcel back to me and tracking on the return label says it was delivered from my local depot. I sent it back to the post office on the same day and crossed out the old label. I asked the assistant if I need a new receipt and they told me no because it was already scanned in.
2 weeks later and no refund and the tracking is the same as before. I contacted music magpie and they said they have not received it, but 1 reply said they received it and they are testing it. I contacted them again and they said they are waiting for royal mail to respond to their lost parcel claim. I contacted royal mail and there wasn't anything they could do but they told me that I should have received a new receipt when I posted it the second time so it can be tracked. I haven't received any response from music magpie. I am worried that I can't get my refund of 500 pounds back because of this.
I contacted paypal and they said they cannot do a dispute if I sent the item back if its only not required. I think things are progressing slowly because of the holidays, I would like to know if it's possible to get a refund for this at the end of the day?

I once had a "delivered" returns parcel track through the system OK, the delivery office I took it to couldn't figure out what to do and "delivered" it so I took it to the PO and sent it but I did get a receipt though. Not removing the original label - something Amazon clearly tell you to do on their return instructions to avoid problems like this - was the first mistake. Telling the PO what had happened - POC staff can usually turn a small error into a crisis - was likely the biggest error and cause of your grief. I think you are in for an up hill struggle with no proof of postage apart from the one that returned it to you.

I agree with molerat, you are going to have a problem progressing this because you have no proof of posting. Claiming that the staff member in the PO told you it wasn't required could easily turn into "he said, she said".
