To sign up to Instagram... I do have a Facebook account, though I rarely use it, but I don't want to sign up to Instagram via my Facebook account. Is it possible to sign up to Instagram independently from a Facebook account, or would I need two different email addresses? I'd only use my PC, not a mobile app.

Seems you can do it without the need to use your FB account: -Go to instagram.com. Tap Sign up, enter your email address, create a username and password OR tap Log in with Facebook to sign up with your Facebook account. If you register with an email, tap Sign up. If you register with Facebook, you'll be prompted to log into your Facebook account if you're currently logged out.

I've been looking on internet about it today, and I thought I understood (from one of the pieces I'd read about it) that if you use the same email address your account gets linked. I don't know if this is correct though, and I may have misinterpreted it.0
