Replacing windows

Hello,

I've just moved into a property with draughty aluminium windows and have received two quotes to have them replaced with PVCc double glazed windows. The quotes seem really high but I'm not sure. It could be due to the size of the windows. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

5 windows and 1 patio door=£6222.

Broken down it looks as follows:
1 patio door W 2.5m, H 2.1m= £3949

1 window W 1.3m H 1.2m= £1276

4 windows W 2m H 1.2m= £1619 each, plus 3 windows need toughened glass= £248 each.

This totalled £12445 but they said they'll give a 50% discount, so it'll be £6222.

Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance

Yer. Right... Anyone you does this sort of pricing is going to be a charlatan. I'm guessing this is one of the big nationals outfits ?

Have a chat with friends & neighbours - Ask them for personal recommendations, and get some quotes from local companies. The better ones will not have salesman, and they certainly won't use this magical "discount" or "ring the boss for a special deal".
You want a clear up front price without any bullsh** or fake incentives.

Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • Agree with freebear if they knock off 50% then thats the time to worry you are being ripped off. Go local & I bet you will get a lot better price & service
  • Thanks freebear and donemedosh. That was my concern as well. And yes, both were national firms who quoted me. I'll heed your advice and try a smaller local firm
  • Bet they sent a "salesman" round?

Last time I got a PVC door from a local window company they just sent a fitter round to measure then they emailed the price. No selling involved. The way I like it.

just do the sums . toughened glass double glazed is around £50 per m2 . your window 2m x 1,2 m would set you back about £100 max . they've stuck £250 ON TOP OF WHAT NORMAL GLASS WOULD COST . Max prices in white to a standard house with a bit of making good ball park £4k max (£1600-£400-£500(x4) inc fitting and toughened glass

Any company that quotes £12,445 - and then immediately offers a 50% discount - should be avoided like the plague/covid.

I am planning new bedroom windows but would only ever use a local firm. Wouldn't touch anyone who made offers like this
  • Agree completely with the replies so far.

About 7 years ago we had some windows replaced. We had two local quotes and one national. The national bloke was straight out of the 1980s. After 2 hours on a Sunday it was really hard to get rid of him whilst he "phoned the factory for the best possible discount...". On a Sunday.

Terrifying that some and more likely to be vulnerable people fall for these tactics.

Get two local quotes (preferably via recommendation or at least social media recommendation) would be my advise.
