Bottom teeth are always the worst - they don't have the same surface area as upper ones, and so don't 'stick' like they do - plus, the tongue is wobbling about right next to them as well.

It is possible to learn the muscle control necessary to hold the in place, but it takes time, and it will only really begin when you ditch the fixative!! Sorry!!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Hi I had my teeth all out last year beat thing I ever did feel much better. I used Poligrip ultra first time using it when it came to taking them out I was nearly crying as they were well stuck, hurt like mad getting them out.. Dentist said try small dabs instead of doing a complete line round them. I put it on my denture in the morning and by bed time the teeth come out no problems now and the adesive is on my plates and not round my gums. Only problem I find with adhesive you have a continuous minty taste in my mouth.

  • I use Polygrip Flavour Free in the purple box. It's quite hard to find in the shops so I tend to buy a few when I see them. Because it is genuinely flavour free you don't get the pervasive taste of mint in everything you eat. I can munch apples, corn on the cob and just about everything else without worrying about them falling out. And when I put the fixative on around 7 am, it's easy to get off the plate at 11 pm. I do find that if I put it on later in the day, I have to use less or I end up in a sticky mess at night when I take them out to clean them. Isn't it a hassle? But I have a lovely smile :-)

Thank you everyone for all the replies - after a week or two's trial and error I've found that the best for me is a combination of your suggestions. I'm using Fixodent Original, putting small dabs on instead of a solid line, which seems to work fine. Only trouble I have is still with bottom dentures but as Toothsmith says they're the worst, so I might have to apply a little more toward evening if I'm going to have dinner late.

Prudencekitten it is a bother but I'll get used to it, just a case of fitting a new task into my daily routine. And yes, a lovely smile, now I just have to get out of the habit of covering my mouth when I talk :D

Thanks again and a Very Happy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year to Everyone!

Toothsmith, you've just reminded me of when my dad first had his dentures (top and bottom). I don't think he had any bother with the top ones, but I remember him grumbling that when he drank a cup of tea his bottom set would be floating around his mouth!! :D I don't think he uses fixative and I don't hear him grumbling any more so I assume he's got that problem sorted!

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

Yes - they do settle down with a bit of persistance and willpower!

There was a denture specialist who used to give a lecture around the country entitled 'The Top One's Fine But.......'

They are the words guarenteed to strike fear into the hearts of dentists up and down the country!!!

It's often said that the most cost effective way to make a patient a trouble free denture is to give him/her a fiver for the bus fare and recommend your colleague down the road!

Bottom dentures are notoriously difficult to wear. Very few people get any suction on them.

Most people eventually adapt and their muscles learn (like riding a bike) how to keep dentures in. However some people never adapt and continuously have difficulties keeping dentures in.

On the whole denture fixatives rarely work on bottom dentures as saliva and muscle action washes it away.

The only reliable and expensive solution is for implants to help keep denture in if you have none of your own teeth , or for precision attachments on your own teeth to help keep the dentures in. Neither of these solutions is available on the NHS.
  • Just wanted to add my thanks for the advice here. I had my last remaining teeth out last week and have been having trouble keeping the denture in place. I shall keep persevering until I am able to get new dentures. I think I've had these for over 20 years!!!
