denture fixative

Hi, don't know if I'm in the right place here but I'm hoping someone can advise me..I recently had my teeth removed and yesterday got both upper and lower dentures. The dentist showed me how to use a fixative and gave advice on cleaning them etc BUT she didn't tell me I'd be left with a mouthful of fixative that would be impossible to remove! Last night I tried toothpaste, warm water, a soft toothbush, peeling it off etc, but it wasn't budging. It's obviously a good make  but I don't want it in my mouth all night. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can remove the tacky stuff stuck to the roof of my mouth? Many thanks in anticipation

You maybe putting too much on. Try a bit less.

Obviously it is designed to stick, but warm water and a bit of brushing should do it.

Never been asked that question before, so I'm not really sure. I'll try and ring up a rep tomorrow and see what they say.

What make is it?? Fixodent is probably one of the best.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Hi, and thank you for replying - it is Fixodent, the 'original', pink one...the dentist demonstrated how to put it on so perhaps she was a bit heavy handed. Will see what happens tonight after I used it myself this morning. I don't think I put on as much as her, didn't enjoy the thought of going through that again!

Re onejontwo's comment - I too would have found it amusing/off putting six weeks ago, and can appreciate your humour (would have killed you last night while I was trying to get unstuck though!)

Thanks again, I'd be interested to hear what your friend the rep has to say.

    Kind regards

might be worth trying Poligrip Comfiseal Strips, They are pre-cut denture adhesive strips, so you don't have to deal with messy creams.

I was just wondering if your dentures are new, why the fixative? I have new dentures and they fit very well and do not need fixative... I did get some sore spots but with adjustments they are now fine... I thought fixatives were for use when your dentures are older or needed re-lining.... or maybe its just while they 'settle down' I didn't think of that....

It's true that generally, a new denture shouldn't need fixative at all. And it is pretty horrible stuff!!

But, if you've just had teeth out, and it's the first denture made to fit over the extraction sockets, then the fit is often not brilliant, and the ridge is changing very quickly as it heals, and therefore the fit is deteriorating fast.

I'm assuming that the OP will have further appointments in a few months time to make another denture that should hopefully fit much better, and last much longer.

tanith I used fixative because that's what the dentist advised...

Toothsmith they are my first dentures but permanent ones. I did ask about temp ones but she said they so seldom fit that it is better in her opinion to wait until healing has taken place - in my case 4 weeks - then have a permanent denture.

moomim-white I like the sound of Polygrip strips and as I'm still having problems with the pink gunk I think I might try those. Thanks for letting me know about them.

Thank you to all for your interest and advice

  • I also find it very strange that new dentures need fixative.usually the top ones are no problem and maybe only need fixative on the bottom?
But if they are really such a bad fit maybe they are not right?

tallyhoh I tried not bothering today and all was well...but only until I had breakfast. Just cereal but my bottom teeth weren't going to stay put no matter what! Perhaps tomorrow I'll try the glue on them and not the tops ones. I'll beat this thing, heaven knows I went through enough to get nice 'teeth'! I'd be interested to hear how people use their tongue to control them...anybody know how it's done  ? At the moment my tongue has a mind of its own and seems far more interested in feeling its way around its new companions than getting them to behave themselves..
