I’ve had flights booked to go to Germany on 30th December, however now with the rule changes I am unable to go as they are not letting in tourists. The only way, according to the Ryanair website that I can get a refund is if that cancel the flights (which I doubt they’ll do). Do I hold out and hope the airline cancel the flights, or would you email requesting a refund and see what they come back with? I obviously don’t want to lose the money so in a slight predicament about what to do!

If tre flight goes you will not get a refund from Ryanair. They have no obligation to refund you and just do not refund.

Your only hope of a refund is that they cancel the flight.

Alternatively, you  can move the flight to a later date , but , depending on what ticket you bought,  there will be a cost for that.

Do you have travel insurance that covers you for government restrictions?

As sheramber has said your only hope would be to claim through your travel insurance.

Ryanair have cancelled very few flights during the pandemic, their business model appears to be that it's cheaper to fly an (almost) empty plane and not refund people then cancel the flight and have the cost of refunds, plus staffing costs etc.

    Good luck

The flight will likely run for the benefit of Ryanair's customers who will benefit from it operating, such as those returning from Germany and German citizens and residents.

Ryanair would be in breach of their contractual obligations to those customers if the flight did not operate as scheduled.

Insurance is the way to go here as you have paid for the use of a seat on a Ryanair flight and that seat will be reserved for you.

I’ll read through all of my insurance documents, I know it covers me if I catch Covid either before / if I was there but unsure if it covers for government restrictions.

Changing the flight I’ve looked at, and you’re right, it adds on around an extra £200 on top of the flights I’ve already paid for.

The 'good news' for Ryanair passengers is that bookings are so poor for January that they announced this morning they will be cancelling around 33% of their planned flights and this will allow refunds, we just don't know yet which routes are going to disappear
