Carpet fitter scratched marble hearth

We’ve just had a carpet fitted and all looked good earlier today. It wasn’t until later on we noticed that our brand new marble fireplace hearth has got scratches all along the bottom and sides where he has cut the carpet. We are renovating and when I say we have been careful to the extreme to look after this hearth since it was fitted only a month or so ago, I mean we have had it bubble wrapped to the nth degree in case one of us drops something on it, scratches it etc. so it didn’t have a single mark on it. Ironically we took the bubble wrap off the bottom yesterday so the fitter would be able to get the carpet right up to the edge. It’s now got about 8-10 very clear knife marks where the carpet fitter has been cutting away at the carpet, and at some points has used it as a straight edge. The fire inc fitting has cost us over £1k inc fitting and we are devastated. Any idea if we will be recompensed?? Thank you all.

Have you informed the fitter?0

Doesn't sound like your hearth is going to wear very well if the carpet fitters knife has marked it.

surely it's not real marble if it can be marked with a knife?
any pictures?1 -

Is the fitter employed by the store, or subcontracted?0
