Hi,
I don't want to go into details, but after getting quite stressed toward end of last week, decided I'm truly not suited to sales job and should never have tried.
I went to hand in my notice as written but seems I've got an unresponsive HR. Notice wasn't acknowledged, well not yet. I guess this is the problems when remote working.
I've also had a verbal conversation with a senior manager asking me to stay in the interim until I get another job fixed, which seems incredibly kind given I'm pretty incapable.
But I see their point they've put a week's training into me (unlike other places) and trusted me an opportunity which they now know I didn't apply for, and I should contribute this back. (not their exact words but kind of how I really can see it, guess a call centre still needs bums on seats to deal with calls and it being the time of year it is)
My concern is, whilst not a bad thing, this leaves me open to being sacked/dismissed now?
I guess my question is being what do I do now - should I write again to HR? Could they write to me advising of a leave date?
I'm just concerned being remote, with what's gone on, in a few weeks time, HR could just turn around and say well you've left.
Regards the CV and getting away from a sales position in future as I'm really unsuited to this line of work - how do I go about getting that presented on the CV or does it need a totally different career - factory / retail. Does it have to read as a real negative or should I just make a line in the about me info section requesting no calls about sales work?
Thank you.

As long as you have given them the required notice, there is nothing more you need to do. You don't have to work beyond that date, but if you agree to do so you should insist on an end date in writing. As the job has you badly stressed I would not be inclined to agree to an extended notice period.

You don't have to stay beyond the date your notice expires and while they have invested a bit of time into training you that doesn't mean you 'owe ' them or have to stay longer than your notice , if you don't want to or feel it would be too difficult.
If you are willing to stay, then speak to your manager and ask that they liaise with HR to ensure that everyone is on the same page both about the fact that you are extending your leaving date and about how much notice you need to give them when you ae ready to move on - e.g. is this At Managers request, I have agreed to push my end date back to [specific date]" or is it "At managers request, i have agreed to push back my leaving date - I will continue to work and will give you at least 5 working days notice when I need to leave"? Either way, put it in writing to your manager cc'd to HR and ask them to confirm that you have correctly understood the agreed variation.

What ever you do, get all conversations in writing.Even if you have to send their conversation to them, along the lines of:-Further to my conversation with (x) on (x) at 2pm or what, I was asked to stay until..... and send it to them.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Thanks, yes I just didn't think through the implications when I was called by management asking to switch the computer on and go back to work, the employer is in a totally different part of the country and so mentality may be a bit different) I did try and reason if they wanted someone who is best somewhere else, but they kind of switched it saying you don't know what may happen (eg lockdowns) and to carry on with the job until something more appropriate comes up, rather then be job seeking with no wage.
Sadly the email I sent can't be recalled so thank you greatly for the pointers.
The team leader whose team I am meant to be joining did do a back to work form for the missed hours leading up to the conversation, so maybe something got noted there.
Lordy, realise I got to really work on managing this stress, that I like to create.
Thank you again for the help today.0 -
Not clear when you say "which they now know I didn't apply for" is this a new employer or a change within an existing one.
I would think about this slightly differently.
You want to leave and are starting that process, that should reduce the stress a bit as you know there is a way out.
You may actually be a better than you think just don't like it.
They are offering to keep you employed till you find something else which is good but follow up with your concerns about performance an actual leaving dates.
Explore other options within the company that may be a better fit, maybe there are less sales options that might be a better fit.
For the job did not fit when looking for something new think about the key elements that are the problem, you want to minimise any overlap with other potential employment.

Sorry I should have been clearer a job agency talked me into going for the job and I had a little prob with RtW proof - I should have stopped them but I realise now any of my past sales-type of experience I had wasn’t direct sales. It’s like chugging but being on a phone.
I’ve loved working from home, companies heart is in right place but it is sales, sales, sales whether you are customer service or sales. knowing teams in more depth has opened so many avenues which had closed off, loved the new starter group although a lot got shed, (it made me go and met a bunch of strangers for having the best evening of the year) even two of the good sellers of group just grabbed their first pay and ran. I really want to do the right thing.
Since posting I have learnt I can’t and have no chance to speak to HR anyway.
Everything has to be verbal with team leader as it’s now been made clear this is one of those situations where performance, attendance, ranking, stats all effects the team leader’s bonus and standing so they are deeply persuasive and in a difficult position let’s say.
I think from the call centre scheduler set for later in January, very understandably a hard conversation is coming up.
Thank you for responding even though I was in the wrong other day on here.0 -
Your contract will state your required notice; if you choose to you can extend it (I've done that in the past, to see a project through). As for repaying training; that's all down to what's in your contract.0

Yep, it states one week for new starters until passing of probation at 6 months. I am nobody of any standing, just making largely unwanted calls via a dialler from a call centre where you sort of get a fuzzy joy when people swear at you at the point of DPA (and I ain't even a debt collector or calling about anything bad!). I sort of regret answering their withheld number call last Monday, that'll teach me. I certainly didn't ask them to keep me on.
Their handbook is most detailed of all the sections ironically surrounding notice, which additionally advises you can resign immediately and agree to pay only up to the point worked. (seemed fair and understandable enough) I appreciate this now seems an Insurance company with a very much outsourced call centre so possibly that explains HR not wanting to get involved unless you are stage 5 of their game playing dismissal process. (as I finally got it out of them)
The pay I believe has paid out until the 31st so can I not say to them tomorrow ok as on the 31st December we are equal, please let me go. (perhaps that is possibly being too polite for them)
I now have other interviews booked for different work, which I don't want to give up. They've blocked me booking any holiday going forward as it is.
I really don't understand this situation as they must have to claw back pay of those who left starting group last week. I have no intention to repay 5 days of training and they don't make a charge for this *fortunately* as I guess it is up to the Employee to keep up on teams with the induction in getting this is in prospective, I will however and always was prepared to book a same day courier to get equipment back to them.
