I bought a jumper from burtons, it is far too small for me, but to return it, burtons are wanting a £1 suit fee, even though a jumper is clearly not a suit. It’s only £1, but surely by charging me for the return they must be a breach of distance selling regulations?

Not necessarily.   *IF* they make it clear to you that you will be responsible for (all of some of) the cost of returning unwanted items - in a durable format (either email or paper), then they are entitled to do so.  Generally this would be sent to you via email either with the order confirmation or the dispatch notice, or might be printed on the back of the invoice in with the clothes.

You need them to clarify what this is and why they are charging you. The only mention of a £1 suit fee is regards the £1 suit deal where you buy one suit and get another, presumably for a quid. As this clearly doesn't apply then it seems a mistake has been made somewhere.
