Gas meter has reset

My gas meter seems to have had a slight aberration. It looks like it may have reset to zero at some point. The last reliable reading was back in January and was over 25,000 m³. The display now reads less than 2,000. To complicate the issue, we are now on a different supplier, the original having gone bankrupt a few months back.
The question is, what is our liability for gas given that no one can accurately measure how much we have used. Our current supplier has asked for two readings, a week apart, presumably to estimate our usage.
Any advice or guidance gratefully received.

All previous gas readings used for billing purposes will have been validated by an independent Data Collector. Your supplier should use the last validated reading as the basis for any estimation going forward. I would suggest that you push the supplier to change the meter which will probably have to be a smart meter.
