Skoda kodiaq 2018 brake lines issue

Hi our Skoda kodiaq 2018 7 seater has just failed it's MOT.

The brake fluid cap was missing according to the garage and this has contaminated the brake pipes with water and corroded the drivers rear brake disc.

Not sure how this has happened but this MOT was at halfords and they can't do the repair but they said it would be expensive as the brake pipes would need to be replaced along with the servo and and the rear brake disc.

Would anyone have any idea how much this might cost roughly as I'm worried it will be really pricey!

Thanks for your help.

I would buy a cap for the brake fluid reservoir then take it somewhere else for the MOT. It may need the brake fluid replacing. How Halfords can tell that the inside of the brake pipes are corroded is a mystery to me, as is how contaminated fluid can cause a disc to corrode.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • What he said above!

Buy yourself a cap, take the car to a decent garage and get them to change the brake fluid and maybe pads and discs if they really are rusty. Then get it MOT’d elsewhere.
  • When was the vehicle last serviced and when did YOU last see the cap in place ?

Halfords must either have a very good pipe inspection system or a crystal ball to confirm such extensive issues.

As for the disc, ask them to explain how INTERNAL pipe corrosion has caused the issue.

Check both of your legs are the same length as someone is pulling one !

Get the brake fluid changed and a new cap and you're good to go for an  MOT elsewhere.
  • I would perhaps replace the brake fluid, then filter it to see if there is anything nasty in it.  Then I would keep the resultant fluid sit in a glass container and see if any separation occurs (not sure if this will work but it might).  Then I would carry on with new fluid and monitor.

Don't think pads and discs will have suffered any effects.

or get and oil analysis carried it. It could tell if there was any water in the fluid and if there are any metal particles in it and what type of metal if there is

Sounds a bit forensic and expensive for a missing cap!

Expensive? Less than £20, but that might be a lot to some people I guess.

But if you know the fluid isnt contaminated then you know there isnt any need to change all those parts apparently needed. Your idea to see if the fluid is not contaminated by put some in a glass container is no way near good enough, especially where its to do with the brakes

I'd rather spend £20 and know there isnt a corrosion issue with the brake system than rely on looking at a sample in a glass jar, still each to their own.

  • Boy O Boy have they done a number on you.
First step new brake fluid cap, plus get the fluid changed.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic. what does this mean read below.

    https://www.mynrma.com.au/cars-and-driving/car-servicing/resources/understanding-brake-fluid

Damage inside the pipes is very remote.
Unless Halfrauds stripped out all the pipes and looked inside they could not say that with a straight face.
    Did his nose start growing.
Corroded discs are common, due to littles use, salty area where you live etc.
Look through the wheel and see how bad it is, after 2 days parked your discs will be rusty.
I use my car once or twice a week and are rusty when I start my journey and fine when I get home.

Who left the cap off, where was it last serviced. Due to fluid needing replacement every 2 years.
Should have been done in 2020 service.

Get cap and fluid changed, then find a no pass no fee mot test centre if you can. Or just an honest mot test garage.
    I bet it passes.
