re nigels observer column - although your maths is sound re the 28 years, the first sentence on the source page states:  Nigel has written his weekly column for The Observer newspaper for twenty-seven years.

That might have been written earlier this year and not updated...   The first column was Sep 1993 so it is 28 and a bit years now.
