SSE refusing credit refund

I get both my gas and electricity from SSE and have had no problem in the past when requesting credit refunds. My latest bills, calculated from my meter readings, showed credits of £94 on the electricity account and £52 on the gas account totalling £146. When I requested a refund, via online chat because they no longer have a refund form, they said they had to keep at least one months Direct Debit as credit on each account. I asked them where it said this in T&Cs and when it had changed. They said it changed at the end of October but they had not yet sent out any communication about it.
Where do I stand on this?

It does seem to be a standard thing with the energy companies currently.  I was told this by Bulb prior to submitting a change and again by Eon when I did change.

The only possible way around it may be to not pay one month but that may have other ramifications, including putting up your monthly DD, after making pay to catch up.  Best to look a bit more into their T&Cs.

With the current situation in the Gas and Electric market they will not be keen to refund you especially as we are just heading towards the coldest months.

Unless you are on a fixed rate come April you will probably be glad to have a bit of credit with them.  Prices are going to skyrocket then.  Leave the money where it is as a cushion going forward.
