Is Bright smart meter app safe?

I have a SMETS1 smart electricity meter which has been updated so now works with my Octopus (formerly Avro) account. When this was installed by SSE several years ago I never got an IHD, as I was on a  trial for an app and Avros was never able to read it so not bothered. As Octopus can seemingly now access I wanted to use the smart meter as intended.  I have seen a few people recommend Bright app but when I log in it is asking for copies of bills, proof of address etc. Is this safe or a scam to stay clear of?

Sounds like you are installing the wrong Bright app. All mine asked for was to create an account and password and the UID from my in home display. You want the Bright app from Hildebrand Technology Ltd  from the Apple or Google store

Would that be the UID from the IHD that the OP never received?
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • The Bright App is produced and supported by Hildebrand. Hildebrand is a Registered DCC user and it has recently carried out work for BEIS on a smart tariff price comparison tool.

Be careful, theres an energy company called Bright, which isn't the same as the Bright App from Hidebrand (Glownarkt). I'm guessing you've found the energy co rather than the one you want.

As Swipe says, all they want is the the mac address from the IHD so they can access the DCC

Hildebrand requires the GUID and the MPAN to set up Bright for access to smart meter data. To access data, Hildebrand uses a DCC-approved Adapter (a secure piece of software). Hildebrand can also connect its own to IHD/CAD (when available) to a HAN.

I have been using Bright for 2 years. I am not sure what would constitute unsafe?

Bulb customers can also access smart meter via the CAD side of an IHD/CAD and SmartThings.

They can get it from the smart meter instead then

Smart meters have no direct external communication facilities and smart meter data can only be accessed via the comms hub. The comms hub establishes two networks: one, a wide area network (WAN) that connects to the DCC Network and, two, a Home Area Network (HAN). lHDs and CADs are connected to the HAN. Hildteband may be able to access your comms hub without a GUID number but this question is best directed towards Hildebrand Support.

Data can also be accessed via the N3rgy.com website. Use the ‘I am a consumer’ tab.

I can confirm that if you are not able to provide the required information from the IHD they do require a copy of your bill as proof of your address. I sent this to them and they gave me access to my Smart Meter data through the app, so it's not a scam.
  • Thanks everyone. Think I have the right app but as people have said I don't have the IHD so they are instead asking for copies of bill, proof of address etc.. Seems like it is legitimate so safe to proceed.
