Returning item to Amazon

I bought a wireless mouse from Amazon which arrived 2 weeks ago. Only today, I have gotten round to using it. More like, trying to use it. The USB receiver will not fit into any port. I have never returned anything to Amazon before so I need some advice.
It says on the items page that there is free returns for new items. I have cut the seal on the box (no other way to get to the mouse inside). Does this mean the item is no longer new? Will I need to pay for return postage?
How do I package the mouse?
What do I need to put in the package with the mouse?
Can I take the package to a Post Office?

It seems unlikely they'll give you a full refund for an item that isn't faulty and has had its packaging mangled. What mouse is it?1

Most of these mice require a USB A port. So unless you are on a MAC odd's on you have one. Have you tried turning it round, as they only fit one way.
Sorry if you already have, but it's surprising how many people never do. 🤷♂️Life in the slow lane1 -
... or if it won't fit because your USB-A port is too recessed into the computer to allow it to engage, consider a short USB A to A extender cable (note: A-male to A-female) which will allow you to plug the dongle into the cable, then that cable into the PC.
Such short patch cables can be very handy for physical interfacing errors like this-- I have one for a tiny Wifi Nano-dongle which is impossible to use in the intended PC.

Did you buy one with the wrong USB connection, or is it faulty?1

Would something like this help: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184478665411?hash=item2af3c90ac3:g:KgAAAOSwgqxffbVv&var=692182545055
(other, possibly cheaper, extension cables are available)2 -

If it's the former - then you've probably just bought the wrong thing*. If the latter, it may be faulty.
* All it not lost, you may still be able to use the mouse as your PC/Laptop *might* have bluetooth built in which *might* be compatible with the mouse. No way to tell without testing though.1 -
I think the USB receiver hasn't been made to the right size. I have placed it against others and it is a little bit taller. It have no problem putting anything else into the port.0

If a reasonable consumer would expect the mouse receiver to plug into a standard USB port an a standard laptop and it won't - well then that is ground to return it even though the packaging is opened.0
