I am due to move in the next few days to a property which the previous owner was using British Gas for the electric and gas.
Looks like I will have to register with British Gas when I move in. Any idea of the current rates for a variable contract with British Gas?

Electric Kwh?
Electric daily standing charge?
Gas Kwh?
Gas daily standing charge?

  • Hi,
try THIS, give you an idea, don't let them talk you into a fixed deal contract.

    Thanks.

One more question, are British Gas obliged to put me onto a variable tariff when I do move? Looking at their website this does not seem an option and only fixed contracts are available.

You will need to phone them - give them name and address, date of start of occupancy, opening reads, bank details and tell them you want to stay on the deemed variable tariff - DON'T get forced into a fixed contract!

I just went on the BG web site and clicked for a quote when moving home.  It offers fixed but at the bottom it suggests calling them for the variable rate.  Presumably its a business decision to offer fixes as an easy option and make it a couple of extra steps for people to get the (presumably loss making) variable rate they are obliged to offer.

Our Standard Variable Tariff rate can change at any time - so we recommend selecting a fixed rate tariff for peace of mind and protection against any future price rises. If you want to talk to us about all the other tariff options that we have available - including our Standard Variable Tariff - please phone us on 0333 202 9802 . Also, please be sure to tell us that you’re moving home so that we can direct your call to the right team.

I contacted British Gas who have now put me onto a Standard Variable tariff for both gas and electric, is this the same as a Capped Variable Tariff?

The SVR is the lowest rates for electric and gas, don't go to a fixed rate unless the SVR is higher than a fixed rate.
Someone please tell me what money is
