Paying new card

Hi,
I recently opened a new credit card with Tesco. I have used it once. I now want to pay off the balance. I bank with HSBC . I tried to set up a new payee , and there is a list of businesses. I found a Tesco club card one which matches the start of my card number. So if I use that one, it shows a sort code and account number where the payment will go to.
So my dumb question is, how do they know it's come from me, and how does it get paid specifically to my credit card?

If you pay a credit card bill via faster payment to a standard account identified by sort code and account number then it's important that you add your card number in the reference field, to allow the payment to be allocated correctly.

Your statement will have the relevant payment details on it - if you haven't actually received a statement yet then wait until you do!

you will be able to send a Faster Payment from your bank account to sort code 40-64-15, account number 31310006 and include your Tesco Bank 16 digit credit card number (without spaces) as the reference so we know it’s your payment. Please allow up to 2 working days for the payment to clear.

  • Many thanks. Maybe I'll wait till I get the statement then .  I just wanted to make a payment, just to get it all set up and linked to the HSBC current account.

Just tell the card issuer to set up a direct debit for the full amount and forget about it (obviously check the DD comes through and is taken) - paying before the statement is made makes it look like the card isn't used anyway which is bad for building your credit rating besides which, loses you the benefit of the up to 50 days interest free
