How does a younger generation get taught that it is a nice, thoughtful thing to do to give someone a gift to an older family member if gifts go to children only?
There are present-buying opportunities at other times of the year - birthdays, weddings, holidays, just to say thank you for help given.

Once I stop buying presents eg for my adult Niece or my Godson I apply this to birthdays too, not just Christmas. Maybe not for a one off such as a wedding or special anniversary. I'd not put those into an annual occurrence in the same way.

I'm quite proud that my daughter has managed her money well enough (frequently a difficult task for her to do) to buy  a little something for her parents, grandparents, great grandparents and brother. At 18 she's the youngest on both sides of the family so has no 'children' anywhere to buy for. She could have kept every penny to spend on herself instead but didn't.
This is probably quite unusual but I don’t actually have any children in my family to teach anything to. On my side, which is small I’m actually the youngest (and I’m 36) and on my wife’s side it’s her younger sister but even then she’s in her 20s.

I expect it won’t be that way forever though.
