Is it best to just use search engine and pick a well named insurer.

Every policy is different. Often the insurers will lop bits of cover off or add more restrictions to make the price go down so they appear higher up the comparison site. (I am assuming you mean comparison site when you say search engine rather than meaning Google, Bing or DuckDuckgo etc).
If you buy cheap tat then you suffer the consequences of that when you have a claim. Your circumstances may mean comparison site policies would be unsuitable. Or they may be fine. (for me they would be totally unsuitable).

Some like Direct Line don't have a comparison site presence as they don't want to pay commission .

Very similar to the above, home insurance varies significantly in what it does and doesnt cover (much more than Motor) and so its worth considering what covers you need... "Matching Sets" is something normally only offered at the higher end of the market for example but it means that if one item of a "set" is unrepairable the insurer has to consider the whole set in its settlement. For buildings insurance I struggle to see how anyone doesnt want/need this as we all have "sets" in the form of our kitchen units, bathroom suits, tiling etc. For contents it may be more variable as to if you buy separate items that make up sets or not and if you're bothered that you lose one of your earrings that are no longer made and so wont have the matching earring/necklace combo any more. The one exception to this may be lounge furniture or dining table etc.0
