Chest Freezer

Hi everyone,
Both of my parents sadly passed away within a short space of time and we are still trying to sort out the probate. My older sibling who never moved out of the family home has remained there and this week decided to manually defrost the chest freezer. This is the only chest freezer I ever remember my parents having so it is at least 25 years old if not older.
My sibling managed to defrost it, however, when they plugged it back in they said that it "blew" and some smoke came out of the side and bottom. I am guessing with its age it is not worth trying to see if it can be repaired and with it being so close to Christmas something does need to be done. I have found some chest freezers that could be delivered before Christmas but I do think my sibling is very worried about the cost as well as whether the old one would be able to be taken out of the space it is currently in. It's currently situated in a rather large cupboard and my view is if it got put in there then is should come out.
I guess I'm just asking for reassurance that they should replace it over repairing it recommendations for an affordable chest freezer and reassurance that the current freezer will be capable of being removed.

Why does it need to be replaced with a chest freezer? What is happening to the house?I'd buy one second hand off ebay or facebook marketplace if one is needed. My cousin got a great one for £2.60!Or even ask if anyone is giving one away in local facebook groups. I run a local group and there's always someone getting rid of something.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

As we can't see the freezer in the cupboard, we've no way of assessing whether it was put into the cupboard, or whether there's the possibility that the cupboard may have been built round the freezer. As for whether a new one will fit, a tape measure will give you a guide as to what to buy.Sorry for your loss.Make £2025 in 2025

Facebook marketplace. I got my temporary chest freezer from there for free 6 years ago. Still have it.Not that many free ones in my area, but plenty under £50 -- definite replace such an old freezer. Energy efficiency will be pretty dire by now. It's probably had its time. If replacing a freezer for only one person, I would recommend a tall upright if it fits in the space as they are so much easier to stock/unstock that the deep chests.0
